The Nifty Index Futures saw a decline of 1.04%, settling at 24,120 on Friday, with an addition of 11,518 contracts to the open interest, signaling a short buildup. The NSE Nifty 50 has moved 1.9% since the last expiry in April, with a 12.53% decrease in open interest during the same period in Futures, and a 13.03% drop across the Futures & Options (F&O) segment. The Nifty April Futures is currently trading at a premium of 80.65 points.
The Nifty’s current open interest value stands at Rs 29,831 crore, with the maximum activity in the Nifty Options at the 23,500 Put and 24,500 Call levels. The open interest distribution for Nifty Options suggests a trading range between 23,500 and 24,500. Additionally, the Nifty Open Interest Put-Call Ratio stands at 1.25.
Meanwhile, the Nifty Bank Index Futures settled 1.18% lower at 54,671, with a reduction of 3,237 contracts in open interest, indicating long unwinding. The Nifty Bank Futures has gained 5.99% since the last expiry, but open interest has fallen by 20.59% in Futures and by 58.83% across the F&O segment. The Nifty Bank April Futures is trading at a premium of 27 points, with the current open interest value at Rs 13,688 crore.
Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) Activity
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have added fresh short positions worth Rs 78 crore in Nifty Futures, bringing the total open interest of FIIs in Nifty Futures to Rs 12,861 crore, up from Rs 12,610 crore the previous day. This indicates a fresh buildup of short positions by FIIs.
In the Nifty Bank Futures, FIIs net added a short position worth Rs 1,277 crore, increasing their total open interest in Nifty Bank Futures to Rs 6,051 crore, compared to Rs 5,994 crore the previous day.
The FII long position ratio has decreased to 0.38 from 0.41, with the long-short ratio rising to 0.6. Additionally, the FII open interest put-call ratio stands at 1.09, up from 1.18 on the previous day. In the cash market, FIIs were net buyers, with purchases amounting to Rs 2,952.3 crore, according to exchange provisional data.
