S&P 500 Futures Show Small Movement Ahead of Key Inflation Report

by Joy

Stock futures showed little change early Friday as investors prepared for the end of a losing week and month, while waiting for crucial inflation data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dropped by 18 points, or less than 0.1%. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures gained 0.04%, and Nasdaq 100 futures rose by 0.07%.

These movements come as traders look to wrap up the final trading day of the week and month. February has been a tough month, especially for the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite, which has fallen by about 5.5%, largely due to a 5% drop this week alone.

S&P 500 and Dow Show Losses

The S&P 500 has fallen 2.5% so far this week, while the Dow Jones has seen smaller losses, down by just 0.4%. Both indices have lost nearly 3% for the month of February.

Investors have been shaken by several factors, including President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs and recent economic reports signaling potential concerns. A sharp 8.5% drop in Nvidia stock on Thursday, following disappointing earnings, further dampened investor confidence.

February’s Volatility and Concerns Over Inflation

“February is historically a volatile month for stocks, and we are seeing that trend play out,” said Michael Landsberg, Chief Investment Officer at Landsberg Bennett Private Wealth Management. “Investors are looking for more clarity on issues like tariffs, high inflation, and the overall health of the consumer.”

Key Inflation Data to Watch

On Friday, investors will closely watch the January data for the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expect a 0.3% rise in the PCE from December, indicating a 2.5% annual increase. Excluding food and energy prices, the core PCE is expected to rise 0.3% month over month and 2.6% year over year.

In addition, economic data on personal income and consumer spending will also be released in the morning.
