- India’s Ministry of Agriculture said on Thursday that the country’s wheat output in 2023 could reach a record high of 112.7 million tons, despite crop yield reductions due to unseasonal rains in February and March.
- The Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) of the South African government said on Thursday that the country’s maize production for the 2022/2023 season is expected to increase by 4.65% compared to the previous year.
- Dozens of ships are unable to reach Ukraine after the Black Sea grain agreement was delayed for several days, according to data and three sources, as slow inspections and other uncertainties make it unlikely that shipping speeds will increase.
- Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Agriculture said on Thursday that this year’s grain production is expected to reach 21 million tons, including an estimated 16 million tons of wheat. Official data from the country shows that its wheat production was 16.4 million tons in 2022.
- India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Commerce, said on Wednesday that the country may consider supplying broken rice to other countries only through diplomatic channels.
- The EU crop monitoring agency MARS raised its estimates for rapeseed and wheat production in the EU in its latest report, adding to the downward pressure on prices. Compared to the previous report, the estimated rapeseed yield per hectare in the EU was raised from 3.31 to 3.34 tons, exceeding the five-year average by 8%. Estimated soft wheat production in the EU was also increased from 5.96 to 6 tons per hectare, higher than last year and the five-year average.
- The Ivorian government said cotton harvests for the 2023/24 season will increase by 69% compared to the previous year. “This year, the cotton industry is expected to harvest 400,000 tons of cottonseeds on 400,000 hectares of land, with an average yield of one ton per hectare.”
- The Philippines will still need to import sugar to fill the expected supply gap as only 11 of the country’s 24 sugar mills are currently operational, according to Pablo Luis Azcona, chief regulator of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA). However, imports will be restricted, according to reports.
- Brazil’s sugarcane industry association Unica announced on Thursday that sugarcane crushing in the central-southern region of the country was 43.976 million tons in the first half of May, up 28.25% from the same period last year, exceeding analysts’ optimistic expectations due to improved weather conditions.
